Simplify your life and pair-down on the material items you add to your life.

Many of us have far more than we need. Overconsumption can take a toll on our mental health, is costly, and uses a lot of natural resources, harming the planet. A key focus of Zero-waste living is reducing overall consumption, becoming a conscious consumer and lessening the impact we have on the planet. Following the refusing tips, from our previous post, can dramatically reduce the waste we produce saving money, energy, and sustaining the environment for future generations.

When we do need to add items to our lives, consider these tips:

  • Buy used. You can find everything from clothes to building materials at specialized reuse centres and consignment shops in our community, many of which are listed on the Preloved Page of our Shop Local Directory. Often, used items are less expensive and just as good as new. Online market places like kijij, facebook marketplace, and buy and sell facebook groups are also great places to look for used items. These places are also great for getting rid of unwanted items while keeping them out of our landfills.

  • Simplifying your beauty routine (coconut oil, can replace just about all of your moisturizing needs and can be found in bulk!)

  • Simplify your cleaning routine (baking soda, vinegar, and essential oil can replace nearly all cleaners) Consider reusing the old containers

  • Select products with less packaging, buy in bulk

  • Say no to single-use disposable products and opt for reusable

  • Give gifts of experiences rather than material items

Become a conscious consumer, simplifying your life and lessening the impact we have on the planet.
